Starfish-Like Microbots Could Be Used to Perform Colon Biopsies and Other Procedures

Doctors could soon be deploying starfish-like microbots to perform colon biopsies and other procedures. The “microgrippers” were developed by scientists at Johns Hopkins University, and they can be deployed into the colon in a less invasive way than traditional biopsies. They react to a number of different triggers to close, and in doing so grab on to the walls of the colon.

The microgrippers were recently featured in an article by IEEE Spectrum that highlighted a number of different microbots that are being developed for medical use including robots that are powered by bull sperm.
