Dutch Master Paintings Recreated as Photographic Specimen Art

In 2012 we posted about the photographic specimen portraits of artist Michael Mapes—intricate collages in which photos are cut into pieces and distributed amongst pins, vials, and other scientific equipment. Mapes has created a new series, “Dutch Master Collection,” which applies the technique to reproductions of Dutch Golden Age portraiture. The new series will be featured in “Face to Face,” a group show at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana from March 20 to August 24, 2014.
