Competitors Race Aluminum Snow Shovels Down a Ski Slope at Speeds of Over 65 Miles Per Hour
On February 7, 2015, Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, New Mexico held its ninth annual World Championship Shovel Race, in which contestants rode standard aluminum shovels down a ski slope at speeds of over 65 miles per hour. While the official competition is only in its ninth year, Angel Fire Resort employee Dan Swanson said that the contest dates back decades.
“Shovel racing began as a simple contest here in the 1970s when our lift operators would ride their shovels down the mountain at the end of their shifts.”
