4,696 Flip-Flops Washed Ashore at a Queensland, Australia Beach

Flip Flops

On Cape York’s Chili Beach in Queensland, Australia, 4,696 flip-flops (referred to as ‘thongs’ by Australians) had washed ashore and were collected during a five-day clean up effort by marine conservation group Tangaroa Blue Foundation, headed by Heidi Taylor. According to the clean-up volunteers, over 90% of the debris picked up were made of plastic: “drink bottles, bleach bottles, oil containers, fishing crates, kilometres of ropes and nets, broken bits of remnant from hard and soft plastics, and even plastic resin pellets…”
