Video Game Themed Music Videos

Music and video games are two subjects that nerds can relate to. With the popularity of retro gaming and the ease and low production costs of using machinima, video game themed music videos are everywhere. Here are some recent additions that were definitely worth sharing.

Guitar Hero Hero (Beating Guitar Hero Doesn’t Make You Slash)” is the first music video from MC Lars‘ new album This Gigantic Robot Kills. Guitar Hero Hero mocks obsessive rhythm game fans, while embracing what makes those types of games appealing. It also features members of Nerf Herder and Mr. Big. Check out the “making of” video here.

Röyksopp’s Happy Up Here is what I would imagine would happen if Warner Bros. got hold of the Space Invaders franchise. It’s a gorgeous video with mind blowing special effects. It’s no surprise considering Röyksopp’s Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge are cool and nerdy guys themselves.

The Adventures of Duane and Brando are a Flint, MI based rap group that exclusively rap about classic video games. Their music video for “Mega Man 2″ also serves as a decent walk through to beating the game’s classic villians. (via GameMusicForAll).

Dr. Zilog – Kids (8-bit MGMT Remix) from pieter montoulieu on Vimeo.

Although there’s no proper music video for it (yet), I’d be remiss not to include Dr. Zilog’s chiptune cover of MGMT’s “Kids”. Considering the low-tech sound of the original, it’s a perfect fit for 8-Bit. Download here.

This reminds me of this:

A Depeche Mode track on top of TRON. Not the original music video, but it syncs up pretty well together.

I have to take you to task for not including the great video for Mouse on Mars’ “Twift” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAJ4OT6-5GU – although I guess 1997 isn’t “recent” these days, is it.
