Solarium, A House Made of Caramel

Solarium by William Lamson

“Solarium” is a greenhouse-like structure that derives its stained glass appearance from sheets of caramel. Each of the 162 colored panes is made of sugary caramel layered between two sheets of glass. The color variations were accomplished simply by cooking the caramel to different temperatures (see the making-of video). Designed by artist William Lamson, “Solarium” was part of the 2012 “Light & Landscape” show at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York.
