Sigma DP1

DP Review is reporting that Sigma has just announced that their highly anticipated DP1, a 14 megapixel compact camera with DSLR-sized Foveon X3 direct image sensor, will finally be coming out this spring. The camera features a wide range of manual controls and can shoot in RAW, with full spec and image quality of a DSLR.

I’m really looking forward to this one. Sigma is calling it a “camera that belongs to no known category” and from the specs it looks like it’s going to be one killer compact camera.

Controls and lens aside, it should give similar performance and output to the Sigma SD14 since they share the same sensor. IQ on the Foveon X3 sensor is supposed to be excellent. The body looks similar to the Ricoh GR Digital. I hope Sigma works hard on making easy-to-use manual controls – they would have a real winner on their hands.

Wow, the specs on that camera sound awesome! Boo on the fixed lens though. Then again, I don’t think I’ve ever really utilized zoom on my random point and shoots. So many choices to choose from. Hmm… this or the Fujifilm Finepix F100fd?

Of course I also want to replace my DSLR as well. It sounds like 2008 is going to be an expensive year for me. ;)
