I personally think that the money would be better spent on providing access to birth control, contraceptives, and sex education around the world… and campaigning for women’s rights, too. Selling the vatican to feed the world for a few days is a nice idea, but does not really do much for world hunger in the long term.
this is the greatest video ever. and in the creamy center of it is the greatest line ever which is “think about it, he is *actually* a caped crusader”.
Hey Sarah,
Give up wiping your ass with toilet paper for a year (one year) and send the cash to Catholic Charities (or a similar charity that fuckin feeds people) for 1 year (2 rolls of Charmin per week – Around 104 total – that’s if you’re light on the wipe,) which would be around $72 per year – to feed a baby in Somalia for the same amount of time. Do it girl!! What have you ever given up for ANYONE else in your pampered, coddled existence, like, EVER???
@Hypatia Completely agree with this.
Should embark on a massive programme of family planning as soon as possible.
I’m sure god (note the small ‘g’) wouldn’t want believers to live in abject poverty unable to feed themselves.
Seriously.
SERIOUSLY??!!?!!!?
Are we REALLY going to play the religion-wealth-card here?
Does that seem WISE?
I am sick and tired of the Catholic Church being an open target, but any other religion being sacred.
I am Catholic.
I am proud and secure in my faith.
I don’t push it on others, and I do my utmost to respects others.
And in my opion this shit has to stop.
Do we really want to discuss the worlds rich, and START by pointing our finger at the head of the Catholic Church?
Really Sarah Silverman, is that wise?
Hi Sarah:
Love your show! Wonderfully witty.
Although I know that the pope truly would like to sell everything in the Vatican he really can’t. It really does not belong to him alone. It is the accumulated inheritance of the 2000 year old Jewish Sect (See James The Just, Bishop of Jerusalum leader of the Ebonites (Jewish Christians) called Christianity. Yes once upons a time all Christianity owed its allegience to the pope before the reformation/east/west divisions/Gnostics etc. You see Sarah most of the documents, art and architecture not to mention history there belong to one of the largest communities of faith in the world Christians. He, the Pope, is only the cartaker or the custodian as it were of these things. I am sure that as soon as the Jewish people collectivly sell the wailing wall and Mount Massada, and Muslims Collectivly sell the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalum and the Kaaba in Mecca, Roman Catholics around the world will be shamed into selling the Vatican. In religion you must lead by example after all.
Be advised though that the money changers/admission chargers will tack on quite the hefty fee to get into the holy sites and artifacts. I imagine that Mount Siani where Mosses got the ten commandments would cost more than a few sheckles. Then the poor whom belong to these faith communities may find it a little difficult paying the tab. Of course this might cause the odd Jihad or Crusade but hey thats commerce.
Without my tongue being in my proverial cheek, let us say it will be a cold day in Shoel before the vatican is sold. All people of the Chritian Faith, including the poor take inspirational happiness from the collective wealth, art and history that is thiers in the Vatican. Who knows maybe even Jewish people and Muslims can take some inspirational happiness from some of the Art and Architecture that can be found at the Vatican. If it were sold whose to say that they would have an opportunity to view it.
I assume this is a joke. Kind of a lame one to be honest. She speaks so slow and makes those weird faces… I guess she is high on something or just overacts.
Anyway, was it for real, it would be a at least a very stupid idea. You cannot stop world hunger by giving out a check, big as it might be. You have to go through social behavior, political and technical infrastructure, and education. For that you need organizations (e.g. Catholic Church) that focus and know how to create such infrastructures. Of course there are people inside who might be corrupt or benefit from the organizational scheme of the Church, but that happens virtually anywhere in the world. Still most Catholic organizations are some of the world’s best when it comes to helping people and to create social wellness. They prove it every day. So why trying to destroy the symbols they believe in?
But to clearly show what and stupid and bad intentioned this idea is, let’s go through it again, although this time, instead of selling the Vatican, what about selling your own house, and give the money to charity? Wouldn’t that be a beautiful thing to do? No? Oh, I see. So when it comes to giving money to the less fortunate, it is cool and even funny to go crazy when it is some other’s money, but not when it is yours! Reductio ad absurdum, my friend.
Hope this comment helped a bit. However I feel this rather insulting video (Insulting not to my religious beliefs, but to anybody’s intellect) was just to get some more hits on her webpage. Guess that’s where resides the truly essence of your ethics, on a number of clicks.
Good luck anyway.
