Several videos have been making the rounds on YouTube showing people popping popcorn with their cellphones. Hoax or the real thing, what do you think?
UPDATE 1: Snopes has debunked the idea of cooking an egg/popcorn with cellphones.
UPDATE 2: Weberence is reporting that this was a viral video campaign by Cardo Systems for their Bluetooth headsets.

I’d like to see it done on a clear glass table.
Based on the acting in that second one, this is as fake as a Bud Light commercial.
just think what it’s doing to our brains when we talk all the time on them….
My concern is, if it really can pop popcorn, can it pop our brains too?
I can’t see how it would work … … but it’s still some cool videos. They all have the same kind of feel to them though – same setups for each of them so they seem like they are coming from the same production company. Intriguing videos though.
I think they might have a heater under the table…
This has to be fake. Heat source or magnetron under the table. Until I see this gag on a glass table, I will not be convinced.
I don’t know why they’re all laughing; i find their naive mirth distressing. It’s like watching old TV ads extolling the virtue of smoking cigarettes, with droll people at cocktail parties mirthfully drawing on cancer sticks.
Snopes says it’s a hoax: http://www.snopes.com/science/cookegg.asp
Bogus and debunked years ago when someone purported to cook eggs with two phones.

fake! I’ve seen similar videos claiming a cell phone can cook an egg.
I am never putting one of those damn things against my head again
I think its something for MythBusters.
So is this a set of hoax videos for…
- A mobile phone? Unlikely since it spreads fear of using mobile phones, but in one an actor says “you have a nice phone” which could a plug for the device.
- Popcorn? I didn’t notice any Orville Redenbacher packages in the videos, but if I worked for them I’d certainly pitch this idea.
- RF blocking shields? You know, those metallic stickers you can buy in Chinatown that claim to block the radio waves while somehow still allowing the phone to work? Often sold with a Battery Enhancer sticker?
One thing’s for sure: I’m going to stop talking on my phone when I have unpopped corn in my ears.
hmmm, this could be ppl just having fun, playing a joke, and/or seeking online attention, but it looks a bit too slick for that… ( imsomnic, yep, that’s pretty interesting that videos from different regions are VEy similar ) it kinda has the feeling of the hired 911 misinformation disseminators to muddy and confuse the real issues.
common sense could pretty much tell you that the abundance of powerlines, microwaves, radar, cell towers and all contributing to EMFs is not gonna be a plus for lifeforms…
haven’t researched details on this topic much, but for sure the telecoms will be dumping all data into the reality shredder for years to come …
for anyone seriously interested in the subject, try neil cherry’s website, but a warning this ain’t no popcorn tricks for shriveled youtube brains.
