Griffith Park Observatory In Flames

A massive fire has consumed Griffith Park in Los Angeles, threatening the Los Angeles Zoo and is currently headed toward the Los Feliz neighborhood. Xeni Jardin just IM’d me as she was packing up to evacuate the area. She’s been doing extensive coverage of the fire over on Boing Boing and she shot some video footage with her cell phone around 8pm. Sean Bonner and Metroblogging Los Angeles are also all over the story and LA residents are uploading a bunch of photos to Flickr.

This is the second big Los Angeles fire in two months. In March, a fire swept the Hollywood Hills as a result of arson. Authorities believe that today’s fire was a result of a man tossing out a cigarette in the brush on one of the park’s golf courses.

For updates on the fire, check out the LA Times breaking news blog.

It’s now been confirmed by the mayor and the LAFD that 600 acres have burned. I’ve been posting pix from my bedroom window here: http://sewdarncute.typepad.com
