Johnny Cash and Andy Kaufman Do Elvis

I recently found this gem, 1959 concert footage of Johnny Cash letting his hair run wild and doing a pretty twisted take on Elvis Presley singing Heartbreak Hotel.

For comparison, check out the clip of Andy Kaufman in 1979 (coincidentally on a Johnny Cash TV Special) doing a very straight impersonation of Elvis twenty years later.

Andy Kaufman is such an interesting actor/performer. Reminds me of some of the acting technique of Michael Chekhov.

Gems indeed. I really try to imagine what is was like to watch Andy Kaufman, what he meant at the time, etc.

Plus Johnny Cash making fun of his rival, too good.
