FeedBurner Acquired by Google

FeedBurner

This appears to be the week that my favorite web services are being acquired. On Wednesday, both Last.fm was bought by CBS and StumbleUpon was purchased by eBay, now today Google has confirmed that it has acquired the Chicago-based feed distribution and tracking service FeedBurner.

We’ve been using FeedBurner for over two years now and it’s one of the best web services out there. We use it to add functionality to our blog’s RSS feeds via their FeedFlare service as well as tracking feed stats, like the FeedCount on our sidebar:

Laughing Squid FeedCount

We even use FeedBurner to convert all of our RSS feeds to email. In fact, the email sent out through The Squid List is via FeedBurner.

Dick Costolo, FeedBurner’s co-founder and CEO, has posted about the news on their blog and they have a FAQ that addresses questions about the acquisition.

Awww man! I didn’t know that Last.fm was bought by CBS. That’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine what they want it for.. to push shitty new bands down our throats? To give bias to their artists? To track piracy? Last.fm had such a great indie vibe.
