Bring Your Own Big Wheel 2008-21

Hundreds of racers and race fans showed up for today’s Easter Sunday Bring Your Own Big Wheel 2008 event organized by Jon Brumit on Vermont Street in Potrero Hill, San Francisco’s crookedest street (see my previous write-up).

Here’s my BYOBW 2008 photo gallery.

Here’s some video I shot of BYOBW 2008 with my Ricoh GR II.

If you shot photos or video of BYOBW 2008, leave your link in the comments.

and I’ll ink thru to a bunch of spectator & helmet cam video once I’ve recovered from all the excitement.

  4. wuz feeling down.
    am not anymore.
yay for big furry animals on small plastic wheels. yay i say, yay.

  5. Today was a ton of fun. The onlookers on the sides were awesome, making sure to push me back into the race after I had plowed right into them with my Barbie Trike. And to those other riders and my own friends who I inevitably smashed into, well that was probably the best part of the whole thing.

  8. Great pics Scott, I had to miss it this year which was a bummer, looks like the new locale worked out, looks like the racers had a bit more track to play with.

  11. All I have to say is, “Oh. My. God.” That was my first time attending BYOBW and I don’t know when I last laughed that hard for that long. Jonathan, Darcy and the rest of the crew: You guys ROCK! This event alone made 2008 a great year! :-) I’ll be back next year fo sho!

  12. That looks like the greatest thing ever.

Was there the smell of melting plastic?

    Fantastic.

  13. Great shots, Scott!

  14. Scott…

Great to see you at such a great event! A couple of notes for prosperity:
    1. Costumes make the event that much better. I wore a full body bunny costume this year - the fabric coverage on my body protected me from scratches, scrapes, and road rash. Highly suggested!
    2. I tend to see most of the actual “big wheels” get trashed within 1-2 runs because they can’t hold any weight. I have used a foldable, Radio Flyer for 2 years with great success. Metal frame, plastic tires, great speed and foldable! Take it on Muni!
    3. Helmets, helmets, helmets: I have been part of some nasty collisions and loved that I have had a helmet on.
    4. Gloves: Always great when you come around the corner and can drag your hands.
    5. Liquor: Highly suggested. Keeps you lube for one more run.
    6. Padding: my knees are quite bruised today from a nasty tumble at the bottom on the 3rd heat. Absolutely worth it, but am considering using knee pads next year.

  15. This puts a smile on my face every year. Looks like there were quite a few home made bigwheels this time. Was that a garbage can on wheels I saw?

  16. I got a few nice shots from turn 5: http://flickr.com/photos/kurioso/sets/72157604238850515/

  18. Folks ~

My brothers Juni and Josh, and I couldn’t find any big wheels left at ANY store so we were not able to join the crowd.

We still went to watch the craziness on Easter Sunday.

Here’s 1 of perhaps 3 vids I’ve put together from the event:

  20. Best time I had in a while. I can’t wait until next year! I’m thinking either…Chewbacca in the Falcon, or George Washington crossing the Delaware.

    All the best!

  21. Raising the Bar on BYOBW 2008

Big Cheers Jon! The Greatest Show on Earth (in San Francisco anyway). All Macarthur’s, Peabody’s, even Rhodes’ to you but especially a Purple Heart.
[Folks, there was Jon, hands-on and leading the clean up afterwards. Can you envision a major green/humanitarian rock star jumping off-stage after his gig and helping with the clean up (me neither!)]
Jon can I friendly amend the event’s title to BYOBW – (AND Bring Your Own Trash Back Home With You!) for next year. Everyone will get it.
An earlier post complimented and encouraged more costuming. Agreed! It’s hilarious to watch but why just the wheeled gladiators?! The spectator crowd should be just as involved. While folks in SF can far exceed anything I can ever possibly think up but for the lack of an idea on that, I keep thinking this; herds of adorable, cute & fuzzy prey-types, rolling downhill thru caverns of howling & cheering carnivorous predictor-types.
But there’s a lot more imagination going on there than that.
Also, there’s now a Second City, Roanoke, VA. Check out the curves on this baby!

A little different but they credit SF for the inspiration. And on this one I keep thinking of all the carnage of hospital gurneys & wheelchairs rolling down Nob Hill’s eastside on California St. Nah, it’ll get nasty!
    Bravo Jon!
