400 Pound Comb Bike Rack Installed As Public Art In Roanoke, Virginia

The city of Roanoke, Virginia sent out a call for artists in 2010 to submit designs for a one-of-a-kind bike rack design, Los Angeles design practice PopUp Design’s Comb Bike Rack was the unanimous winner. The commissioned piece was handcrafted out of Mangaris, a type of premium hardwood decking, and the ‘hair’ within the comb is made of powder-coated steel. The massive piece, weighing in over 400 pounds, will now live in Roanoke’s historic Grandin Village, an area that recently began encouraging the use of bicycles by its citizens.

Popup Design created the bike rack in the Knowhow Shop, a cooperative fabrication shop and design studio in Los Angeles, and was shipped to its new Virginia home in May 2010.
