The mysterious 1-18-08 “Cloverfield” trailer, which was shown in theaters as a preview before Transformers, is now online at Apple. The film is being produced by J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost) and directed by Matt Reeves (Felicity).
For the last week, the internets have been busy trying to figure out just what the film was all about. They had been provided with clues on two websites, Ethan Haas Was Right and The truth of Ethan Haas. Here’s a video from nightowl3090 who does some ridiculously extensive analysis of the trailer and websites. Could the mystery monster be a giant squid or maybe even the legendary Cthulhu? Godzilla it is not.
The film comes out, you guessed it, on 1-18-08. That’s only 6 more months of non-stop rumors and speculation. Hey, at least they are not talking about the iPhone.

I was finally past everyone else’s hubbub about the trailer and the movie so I chose to do my own research with only knowing what was out there the website 1-18-08, I found some interesting things about that date using wikipedia, which we all know can only be trusted so much. I also found a website that is theparasitemovie.com it has the official trailer and seems to have a countdown that matches Ethan’s countdown for august first but it is about the time from the pictures. But back to wikipedia if you search henry e. holt, you can then look into asteroids more and find out about coming asteroids, I don’t think this is a monster the noises sound like a whistling and a crash such as a comet or asteroid crashing to earth, that explains the explosion and all the little fiery objects, and the statue’s head being thrown could very well be just an example of the awesome power of the asteroid and its little rocks!! This could be nothing but who knows??
ohh yeah almost forgot on the official website about the movie 1-18-08, in the picture featuring Rob getting fed a shot, look to the girl on the right, underneath her rm next to the edge of the photo seems to appear a yellow/orange #9 or #5, its just like the weird little guy in between the ladies in the other picture.

Alright… Here goes. Lemme shoot down some of the theories that I can. Cthulhu? Hell no! This movie is already in production and you can go to its website at cthulhuthemovie (add the . com) – It’s scheduled to drop this fall. Godzilla was being held off until 2013 for production, this is true. BUT!!! Sony Tristar lost it’s rights to Godzilla in 2003. And last I checked nobody has picked it up yet. Also if you go to gravelcity ( add the . com) and search cloverfield a spy speaks out. Scroll down to “inside the cloverfield production: A spy speaks out” you will see a article of a spy from the set. He also speaks about slusho. read the article to find out more about slusho and then go to slashfilm (add the . com) and search slusho. It should be the first link “confirmed: slusho. ..” read on. Also the site slusho (add the . jp) is the official slusho site put up 1 week before the trailer was released with transformers. Continuing… THERE ARE STILL 3 SEASONS LEFT OF LOST!!! Forget this idea people! Smoke thing is not gonna terrorize New York. I more than anyone would love to see LOST the movie but not until the end of the series. J.J. Abrams is too smart for that. And what of Mothra? Screw that I’m not even gonna explain that one. And for the dumb asses that have speculating this movie to be Voltron… Voltron will be a movie produced by Mark Costa, Mark Gordon, Pharrell Williams, and Ford Oelman. Also cloverfield is being backed by “Bad Robot” voltron on the other hand by “Mark Gordon Productions” and “World Events Productions Ltd”. So here’s some extra info for you… J.J. Abrams made a direct quote stating “ethanhaaswasright. com has nothing to do with his movie. He states that it is just people banking off of his film. Is he lying? Who knows. The entire movie is also said to be possibly filmed completely in home video and the budget for this movie has been rumored to be less than 30 million dollars. Not quite enough money to make a movie about something you already know about, is it? J.J. Abrams is too smart for this. He is probably sitting at home right now reading all of our posts and laughing his ass off because we all fell right into his trap. He knew what the world would be thinking when he created this trailer with this Godzilla-like roar. But there is one subject that is hard to argue about. This trailer is one of the most effective marketing plans ever. Look at all the hype we are building. Everyone who hasnt seen it yet is hearing about from the ones who have. Cthulhu is looking quite possible at this point. The movie Bryan mentioned is pretty much only about the cultists. From what I understand, not only does he never appear, but the movie sucks ass. Besides, the Cthulhu stories are public domain now, so anyone could make a movie about him.

OK..here’s my 2 cents. I’m in radio, and a friend of mine is an actor. He told me this: J.J. Abrams would never say the word “Ass” in any email. Also, he doesn’t sign letters, emails, etc. with “J.J.” I’m not going to say what he signs them with, or it might set off another storm of questions. Just know that he apparently doesn’t. So, I’d have to say that the email that’s out there from “J.J.” isn’t really from Abrams.
Please don’t ask me for my friends email, either. Can’t do that. However, he’s shooting a film in Shreveport, LA right now, and he said that some actors there already know what the movie is about. He doesn’t care to find out, but evidently Paramount can’t hold the secret in for too long.
Just FYI, he thinks it’s a Godzilla movie, regardless of what I told him about people talking about movie rights etc. being already taken.

First of all, he does not say “It’s a lion it’s huge…”. If you turn your speakers up you can make it out to be “I saw it it’s alive it’s huge”. Also J.J. Abrams came out and said that the word “lion” was no where in the trailer.

I found the comment, “It’s alive” a little peculiar. For instance, if I came across a giant tiger in an allyway, there would be no reason to scream, “Ãt’s alive” as its presence already confirms that notion. Therefore, I think the “monster” is something that is typically inanimate; something that shouldn’t ordinarilly be “alive.”
This is quite ridiculous just about as bad as the cloverfield rumors out there. sheesh.

Personally I think it could be a Cthulhu movie. I meen nobody has ever made a movie about the monster in this day and age, i know there was a silent film called The Call of Cthulhu but i think its about time someone brings it up into the new age. I meen come on how can you rule it out, there’s pleanty of storyline to it, Cthulhu is a giant mixture of monsters that has mated the quasi-female entity Idh-yaa on a planet near the double star Xoth. She spawned 4 children. I meen whats not perfect abou it, Giant monster that hasn’t been touched on since the 1950’s, Has much potential in form and storyline, and the monster has 4 “kids” which leaves great openings for sequals. It’s like a directors wet dream.
Thats just my opinion though. Personially i think it would be kick ass to see a good director like Abrams make and depict Cthulhu.

Best marketing EVER! I saw the explosion and thought Lavos right away. But Lavos was this turtley looking thing. You can see claw marks on the statue of libertys back. The water in the poster has a rift like schools of fish create when they move in packs. Its all pointing to godzilla even though that IP has been beaten to death. Im actually hoping its not godzilla.. I thought it was some jacked leviathan. But eh.. i guess well find out soon enough.

Monstrous?
The 1-18-08 page in the quicktime trailer site has been changed lately, irontically, they have the thumbnail of an “official(?)” poster there (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/hd/), the thumb is so small and smugged, but when we look very closely at the lower right corner of the “poster”, we can actually see a name that “feels” like “GODZILLA”.
Can’t really confirm this because in another page, featuring the large size of the same poster (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/), they have intentionally cut the lower part of the poster off the image… seems someone is still trying to make us play the guessing game :)
oh by the way, what nightowl3090 said was totally logical, Godzilla is TOHO’s property while SONY is used to be their buddy in this franchise. But who knows, the first Hollywood Godzilla movie was launched in like, Stone Age, therefore it is quite possible that some chages in business might happen?

I can almost guarantee at this point no one will be able to guess what this movie is. I’m almost positive that it has to be an original monster. All these clues that you think your getting from JJ are not intended to lead you towards the right path but instead to keep the hype going. This can probably be considered one of the most effective marketing plans in the history of hollywood. Not to mention he’s spending close to nothing for the advertising campaign and its already more anticipated than any other projected film out there to date.

Does everyone remember that video game called “Rampage”. I think it’s either Ralph or Lizzie or George that makes “the sound”. They said, it sounded like an animal… and remeber how they would go around knockin down buildings? and eating people and detroying everything… the monster shoots the fire ball ok first off, there is no way this is another godzilla movie, the rights to make one has been withheld until i believe 2013… so ya and also in the picture, im 99% positive it is just a false image, just the females hair in the way.. it is natural for the human mind to see familiar images, such as faces, in what is not really there ;p… and one more thing why is it, if the creature is behind them, they are staring wide-eyed the opposite direction? you honestly think this thing would not have been heard if it was behind themok if u dont know cthulu is a mythos or diety and he decended from the stars(even tho it has nothign to do with ethan haas, they always mention sumtin about the stars there). he was banished by the elder gods , but not destroyed, this occured before man existed. As legend goes, man stumbles across relics which unleashes this beast and its fiery minions( possibly the fireballs in trailer?) and it is said that his lair/city was sunk to the bottom of the ocean….rhy’el (or sumtin likethat im to lazy to check how to spell) he is supposedly .. roughly 100 feet tall, squidlike head, talons for feet and hands, stands upright, has tenticles, EXTREMELY intelligent.

Does anyone else find it odd that the temperature shown on the TV screen in the trailer is 63 degrees? It’s supposed to be January 18 in New York City. From what I found, that’s a record that’s nearly 40 years old for that part of the US.

Well I for one would like more information on this thing… I know we have a bunch, but its still not enough… I wanna know a little more. I don’t want to know what happens in the movie, or how it ends… I just wanna know more about the movie itself. The film is called “The Host†and they gave it 3 and a half stars. The name The Host is interesting, considering it is reported that the monster is called The Parasite. Parasites need Hosts, right?

On June 19, it was announced that a sequel was in progress for a 2008 release, with a different director. It is planned to have a budget of about 10.7 million.
Both have to do with fish monsters, this could be the sequel.
I don’t know if anyone noticed, but there’s a new pic on the site. No words on it but I just though I’d throw that out there.
I doubt this will be any type of a sequel, they’ve said over and over that we’ve never seen this monster before so I’d highly doubt it.
They’re keeping people wait way too much now, people are starting to lose interest because all we’ve seen was people running and the statue of Liberty’s head been thrown though the city on a street. Besides that all we have is a poster of the Statue’s head obviously ripped off, and a few buildings pushed over as the monster makes it’s way in the big apple.
They need to give out more or America’s going to lose interest, it’s not enough to satisfy people until the movie comes out.
They need something soon, anything!
i have one opinion, weta workshop (the same from the lord of the rings and king kong) has been working with the movie “EVANGELION, with real characters” about the anime series, you might want to check out what is about, angels, the machines who “come alive” at one point in the series…just a thought..

OK ok ok… enough of all of this! 1.) and i feel this is the biggest one, this whole ehtan haas is right (wrong) depending on the blog you’re on, is NOT, i repeat NOT in any way shape or form connected to this 1-18-08 project. it is an ang rpg game if you’re into gaming check it out, they seem to have quite the elaborate set up to get its players involved and wanting more (also appears to be a viral marketing strategy hence the mixup), if you’re a movie buff such as myself, you’re wasting your time . 2) as you watch the trailer, pay attention to the names of the characters, they all have MySpace profiles http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins would be one, his top friends are all characters from the movie, however they all seem to accept friend invites from anyone but only display comments from the movie’s characters. there also seems to be a http://www.myspace.com/slushozoom, i can only speculate this is related because there is a http://www.slushozoom.com website that’s probably the strangest site i’ve seen in a while. click on the pics & you’ll see why, also, when you go to slushozoom be sure to select the entire page (ctl+a) there is “hidden” text on the page it’s creepy, but i have no clue if it’s legit or someone messing with the masses. 3) from what i have found, http://www.slusho.jp/, the aforementioned MySpace accounts, the http://www.1-18-08.com website which incase some of you haven’t figured out by now, a hand full of the pics on that site contain writing on the back (the pics can be flipped by dragging them to the front of the pile & shaken with your mouse & the one written in japanese appears to me to be a recipe of some sort, and http://www.jamieandteddy.com (click on the image of the teddy bears and type the password “jllovesth” without the quotes) and there are currently a total of 3 webcam videos there, none of which seem to shed any light on Cloverfield’s events shown in the trailer (in fact between the character’s myspace pages & this jamieandteddy site it’s almost like these characters are leading a real, normal mid 20’s life along with the rest of us, which is really kinda creepy if you stop & think about it) these are all of the official sites that i know of. then there is http://www.youcantdrinkjustsix.com it redirects to a noaa site featuring a recording of an underwater “bloop” that is said to be unknown in origin. as far as to what this monster is, it’s NOT godzilla if it is, i’m pissed already and they wasted too much of my time. it’s NOT voltron how do i know this so definitively? well, voltron is a 20th century fox project for one, and its slated for 2009 or 2010. as for any of the rest of the speculation, i have to say i don’t think i want to know what it is. i’d have to say i’ll be disappointed if i see what is terrorizing new york in this movie before i pay my $9.50 on 1-18-08 (i’m referring to the day i’ll sit down in the theater) i’m actually more curious what the hell this slusho is & why i cant have just 6, especially when i can’t even buy the stuff. but there will be a new trailer for the film that drops on 11-16-07 in front of beowolf (i moonlight @ a movie theater & splice film on thursdays i have seen a trailer list. it’s only listed as 1-18-08 so PLEASE don’t ask if i have a name & the trailer won’t come until beowolf gets here on the 15th, 14th if we’re lucky)
and to follow up on my last comment, just so it is said… i am hoping this film lives up to its hype, i hope that this date 1-18-08 is meaningful in some way, i hope it doesnt drop on jan 18th because they (Paramount) realized it cant compete with the likes of I Am Legend or AVP2, Sweeny Todd or even National Treasure 2 i hope there is a good reason it missed the christmas season. i know it was actively filming even when the teaser dropped in front of Transformers, i hope it comes out on Jan 18th because it wont be out of post until Jan 4th (the fri before the 18th) i want so badly for this movie to be worth all of the effort everyone has put forth & our money
