Beachgoers in Western Australia can now receive alerts via Twitter when sharks are detected in coastal waters. Scientists have tagged more than 320 sharks with acoustic transmitters—those transmitters are detected by receivers at local beaches, triggering an alert on the Twitter account of Surf Life Saving Western Australia. The tweets include the shark’s description and its distance from the receiver.
