The Movements of Tennis Players Captured in Chronophotograph-Style Long Exposure Photos

In his wonderful photo series, French photographer Jean-Yves Lemoigne captures the athletic movements of tennis players in single long exposure photographs. He achieved the effect by taking long exposures of the players while a strobe light steadily flashed. The images evoke Victorian chronophotography, an early photographic method for capturing movement with multiple consecutively shot photographs (for example, the famed galloping horse of Eadweard Muybridge.) Lemoigne shot the series for the recently released tennis issue of Black Rainbow magazine. The MIT Museum has a similar photo series, shot by Harold E. Edgerton in the 1940s and 50s.
