The Mercure Lamp, A Clever Light That Is Turned On and Off by Tilting It

Mercure Tilting Lamp by Lucie le Guen

The Mercure lamp is a clever light that turns on and off depending on how it is tilted. The lamp’s angular form makes it naturally rest in two positions. When it is tilted toward the base, small metal beads in the bulb roll toward the base and complete a circuit, thus turning on the light. The lamp’s function is inspired by a mercury tilt switch. Mercure lamp was created as a design concept by designer Lucie le Guen, and it is currently on display at the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial in Saint-Étienne, France through April 12, 2015.
