The Barbary Coast – 1975 TV Show Starring William Shatner

Last week while researching a post about The Last Night of the Barbary Coast, I was looking for well-produced, historically accurate videos about 19th Century San Francisco. Instead I found this old TV series starring William Shatner, a 1975 knock-off of Wild Wild West made during his difficult post-Star Trek years.

In The Barbary Coast Shatner plays a secret agent and “master of disguise”; he is also knowledgeable in the ways of cultural stereotypes–you will cringe at his drunk Italian with a monkey scene. And I don’t even think that’s a stereotype.

Actor, nerd, poet, producer, writer mikl-em made his name short so you wouldn't have to. In addition to his blog you can find his writing in "Hi Fructose" magazine and witness him almost life-sized in various plays at The Dark Room Theater in SF's Mission district.

He tends to write about theater, humor, San Francisco culture and history, and stuff that's just plain weird. He thanks Scott for sharing the keys to the Laughing Squid virtual HQ and promises to uphold whatever it is that the mirthful cephalopod would prefer to be uplifted.
