T-Pain Drops Auto-Tune and Sings in His Own Soulful Voice in a ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ for NPR

Singer-songwriter T-Pain, best known for his heavy use of Auto-Tune in his music, recently performed an intimate concert without Auto-Tune as part of NPR Music‘s Tiny Desk Concerts series. The organic, rich sound of his voice in this performance is a testament to the fact that his talent–not Auto-Tune–is the determining factor in his success.

“People felt like I was using it to sound good,” says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. “But I was just using it to sound different.”

Along with the accompaniment by pianist Toro, the first song T-Pain performs, “Buy U a Drank,” sounds very different from the original recorded version.
