US aircraft manufacturers and NASA are working together to develop successor aircraft to the Concorde supersonic passenger jet. The new generation of aircraft are expected to travel nearly twice as fast—2,500 mph—without the deafening sonic booms that limited the Concorde to routes far away from populated areas. The aircraft are expected to be unveiled at the Farnborough International Air Show later this month. For a preview, see the Gulfstream X-54 and Aerion SBJ.
