Sapphirina, A Tiny Marine Crustacean with Beautiful Shimmering Skin

Back in 2013 underwater videographer Kaj Maney shot this intriguing video of a Sapphirina, a tiny marine crustacean or copepod that has incredible shimmering skin. The Sapphirina’s skin gets its dazzling iridescence from its structure—it is covered in microscopic hexagonal plates that only reflect certain wavelengths of light. Deep Sea News has more on the mysterious and beautiful copepod.
