As part of their ongoing ad campaign for their breakfast offerings, yesterday Taco Bell released “Routine Republic,” a short film about a dystopian police state dominated by a single breakfast food (that looks suspiciously McMuffiny). The short heavily references Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Hunger Games, and other dystopian films, while the villainous goons of the Routine Republic look like crosses between Soviet border guards and Ronald McDonald. The hero and heroine of the film–two defectors of the Routine Republic–escape to a land that looks an awful lot like Southern Germany but serves the Taco Bell Crunchwrap for breakfast. The commercial was created by Deutsch LA.
For those of you keeping count, the A.M. Crunchwrap with bacon contains 12 grams of saturated fat (75% of the recommended allowance for healthy adults) and the Egg McMuffin with Canadian bacon contains 260 milligrams of cholesterol (86% of the recommended daily allowance).
