Robohand, An Open Source 3D Printed Prosthetic Hand

Robohand

Robohand is a mechanical prosthetic hand that can be 3D printed at home from designs that are freely available on Thingiverse. The prosthetic is a collaboration between Richard Van As, a South African craftsman who lost four fingers in a work accident, and Ivan Owen, a Washington-based artist who makes mechanical hand sculptures. The duo collaborated over the Internet, meeting in person just once during the development process. The first Robohand was delivered to Liam, a five year old South African with no fingers on his right hand, and as this video shows, it works rather well. For more on the story, see this Ars Technica article and coming up short handed, the official blog for the project. You can also donate to the project on Fundly.
