Rattlesnake Rattling its Tail in Slow Motion

On this episode of Earth Unplugged from BBC Earth Productions, animal enthusiast Sam and camera operator Simon capture slow motion footage of a western diamondback rattlesnake rattling its tail. They used a Photron BC2 high speed camera that was shooting at 2,000 frames per second (80x slower than real time) to capture the quick rattle.

The snake is a western diamondback rattlesnake – one of the deadliest snakes in the States, and responsible for more deaths there than any other. It’s about 5 feet long. We wanted to know about more about how the rattlesnake makes its rattley sound – of course, the rattle moves too fast to understand what’s going on (around 60 shakes per second).
