During an artist residency at the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon, photographer Kirk Crippens sought out interesting, iconic Portlanders for a portrait series. The resulting series, “Portraitlandia” includes more than 45 Portlanders of all stripes, including Voodoo Doughnut founder Tres Shannon, former mayor Sam Adams, and naked airport protester John Brennan. The title of the series—a reference to the IFC comedy show Portlandia—was originally a joke by Crippens, an example of the “worst title you can think of for a portrait project made in Portland.” However many Portlanders urged Crippens to keep the name, and Crippens later realized that his joke title was more appropriate than he realized—several of his portrait subjects have appeared on the IFC series.
