Norton the First: America’s Emperor is an upcoming feature length documentary about Joshua Norton, the celebrated 19th century San Francisco eccentric who crowned himself Emperor Norton I. Directed by San Francisco-based filmmaker Jesse Chandler, the documentary examines Norton’s transformation from British-born businessman to self-proclaimed “Emperor of the United States.” The documentary will include illustrations, animations, and period imagery along with interviews with historians, authors, and Emperor Norton aficionados. Chandler is raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.
