NASA shared a beautiful time lapse that showed a year on Earth from one million miles away. The video was created using images taken by the EPIC camera on the DSCOVR satellite locked between the Earth and Sun. The camera takes a series of images across 10 different wavelengths at least once every two hours.
The video is narrated by NASA’s EPIC lead scientist Jay R. Herman, and combines wavelengths to give the best estimate of how the Earth’s colors would appear to a human at that distance.
EPIC takes a new picture every two hours, revealing how the planet would look to human eyes, capturing the ever-changing motion of clouds and weather systems and the fixed features of Earth such as deserts, forests and the distinct blues of different seas. EPIC will allow scientists to monitor ozone and aerosol levels in Earth’s atmosphere, cloud height, vegetation properties and the ultraviolet reflectivity of Earth.
