Microscopic Crystal Flowers Sculpted by Chemistry

Microscopic crystal flowers

Harvard researcher Wim L. Noorduin molded crystals into beautiful microscopic flowers using chemistry as his artistic tool. Noorduin manipulated the chemical gradient of the liquids in which the crystals were immersed, allowing him to selectively grow the crystals into the flower-like forms. The micro sculptures were then photographed with a scanning electron microscope.
