Los Angeles Deploys Shade Balls to Protect and Conserve Drinking Water in One of Its Reservoirs

In an effort to conserve water and protect dangerous reactions triggered by sunlight, Los Angeles has deployed protective shade balls to float on the surface of the water in one of its reservoirs. The shade provided by the hollow plastic balls prevents evaporation and keeps the sunlight from causing chlorine and bromide in the water from forming bromate, a hazardous chemical believed to be a carcinogen.
