Italian Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti Brews First Espresso on the International Space Station

Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has brewed the first espresso on board the International Space Station using the station’s new ISSpresso machine developed by Lavazza and engineering company Argotec. Cristoforetti drank the espresso from a specially designed zero-G coffee cup that will also help the astronauts study how fluids behave in space. That research can also be used for earthbound applications like medical diagnosis.

The ISSpresso was announced last year, but was only recently launched to the space station and will remain in use through Expedition 43 and Expedition 44.
