How Caltrans Plans to Responsibly Remove the Trusses of the Old San Francisco Bay Bridge

When the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was replaced in 2013, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) needed a plan to responsibly disassemble and dismantle the older version of the span while taking the environment into account. Wired created a clever animation demonstrating how this tremendous task will be undertaken.

The Bay Bridge, which links San Francisco and Oakland, is being methodically dismantled, piece by incredibly heavy piece. Here’s how 2,500 ton truss supports will be removed.
