Gogo Announces Ground to Orbit, 60 Mbps In-Flight Internet Service

Gogo

Gogo has announced Gogo GTO (or Ground to Orbit), a new service that uses “proprietary hybrid technology” to allow in-flight internet on their airline partners to peak at speeds of 60 Mbps (currently maxes at 9.8 Mbps). GTO is described as combining “the best aspects of existing satellite technologies with Gogo’s Air to Ground (ATG) cellular network” and that the “technology will use satellite for receive only (transmission to the plane) and Gogo’s Air to Ground network for the return link (transmission to the ground).” The service is expected to be available in the latter half of 2014 beginning with Virgin America.
