First Container is a prototype community center and retail pop-up space in Detroit that will be housed in two recycled shipping containers. The retail space will fill one container and the second container will be a community space with WiFi, meeting and work spaces, and a stage for events. First Container will launch May 13, 2013 and remain open through the fall. The project lead for First Container, Shel Kimen, is raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.
First Container is a prototype for a much larger endeavor currently under development in Detroit: Collision Works, a 36-room shipping container hotel that will also serve as a creative and community space with co-working and event facilities. First Container will be incorporated into Collision Works when the hotel opens in 2014.
