Filmmakers Create a 7 Mile Wide Scale Model of the Solar System in the Desert With Marble Sized Earth

In “To Scale: The Solar System” filmmakers Alex Gorosh and Wylie Overstreet spent 36 hours meticulously creating a seven-mile-wide scale model of the Sun and eight planets of the Solar System in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The model, which Gorosh and Overstreet say is the first of its kind, uses a model of the Earth the size of a marble and correctly scales both the sizes and distances of the planets from the Sun.

On a dry lakebed in Nevada, a group of friends build the first scale model of the solar system with complete planetary orbits: a true illustration of our place in the universe.

Their short documentary about the project also features timelapse footage of cars with mounted lights driving the scale orbits of the planets.
