Ellen Surprises an Unpinned Gay Boy Scout With a College Scholarship

Moraga, California high school senior Ryan Andresen worked hard to earn his Eagle award. Unfortunately, the leaders of his Boy Scout troop denied it to him because he recently came out as gay. The story has been getting a lot of press and Ryan was asked to be a guest on Ellen. Watch in this video clip as the show’s host, Ellen DeGeneres, has Ryan tell his inspirational story and then surprises him with a $20K college scholarship, a gift from Shutterfly.

Ryan’s mother, Karen Andresen, started a petition at Change.org to urge the troop’s leaders to “reject the Boy Scouts of America’s discriminatory anti-gay policy and to give Ryan Andresen the Eagle award he’s earned.” It can be signed here.
