David Tennant and Stephen Colbert Perform a Modified Version of the ‘Who’s on First’ Routine

In a funny promo for his appearance on The Late Show, actor David Tennant and host Stephen Colbert performed a modified version of the classic Abbott and Costello routine “Who’s on First“, invoking Doctor Strange, Sherlock and of course, Doctor Who.

Stephen Colbert: When it comes to Doctor Who, you’re were my favorite.
David Tennant: Favorite what?
SC: Favorite Who
DT: Favorite Who, who what?
SC: Favorite Who who is The Doctor
DT: That’s strange Stephen
SC: No, Doctor Stephen Strange is Benedict Cumberbatch. You were Who.
DT: Roger Daltrey was Who, but I did play The Doctor
SC: Doctor Who. So you were an actor who played Doctor Who
DT: Well, no shit Sherlock
Both: Cumberbatch

Later on, Tennant spoke about the importance of Shakespeare and the wonderful performance at Stratford-Upon-Avon during the tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Tennant described the scene which a group actors who previously played the titular role in the stage version of “Hamlet“, argued about the best way to perform the most famous line from the play (“To be or not to be, that is the question”), until they were all overridden by royalty.
