‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Creator Bill Watterson Returns to the Comics Page as Guest Artist in ‘Pearls Before Swine’ Strips

Pearls Before Swine

Reclusive Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson returned to the comics page for the first time since the end of 1995 as a guest artist for three installments of the Pearls Before Swine comic strip by Stephan Pastis. The strips feature middle panels by Watterson in an arc that sees a young girl named Libby replace Pastis as artist. The strips featuring Watterson’s art were published on June 4th, 5th, and 6th.

Pastis recounts exactly how the collaboration with Watterson came to be in a lengthy blog post on his website. Watterson also recently created a poster for the documentary Stripped which explores the world of newspaper comics.

At every point in the process, I feared I would say something wrong. And that Bill would disappear back into the ether. And that the whole thing would seem like a wisp of my imagination.
