Back in 1960, British engineer David Latimer sealed a spiderworts plant in a 10 gallon glass bottle out of “idle curiosity.” He opened the bottle garden once in 1972 to water it, and for the past 41 years, the garden has thrived in a sealed, self-contained environment (the only input is sunlight).
