Artist Bernard Pras has created a portrait of self-taught French artist Ferdinand Cheval that may look like a flat composition, but is actually an anamorphic three-dimensional installation made up of found objects. The portrait is an example of a perspectival anamorphosis — Cheval’s face is only visible from a specific viewing point.
The portrait is on display at Le Palais idéal, a monumental sculptural installation that Cheval, a postman by trade, built in his backyard between 1879 and 1912. The exhibition, which also features some other anamorphic works by Pras, runs through August 31st, 2014. We previously posted about Pras’ anamorphic portrait of Malian actor Sotigui Kouyaté.
