Researchers at the University of Miyazaki in Japan are developing an electric wheelchair control system that takes commands from the facial muscles of the wheelchair user (see a video of the wheelchair by Diginfo TV). It is intended for use by people who are paralyzed from the neck down or otherwise have extremely limited use of their lower extremities. The research team hopes to develop a commercial version for release in 2012.
