LiveLeak user livelurked has uploaded an amazing video of a team of ants joining forces and linking their bodies into a chain in order to pull much larger prey — what some viewers believe to be a millipede. The video seems to have captured the tropical ant species Leptogenys at work in South Asia. The Atlantic reached out to California State University entomologist Terry McGlynn, who was baffled and fascinated by the behavior.
It’s not that they haven’t seen ants work together to carry stuff or do things—there are all kinds of ways that ants band together to move or make things—but rather that they haven’t seen anything quite like this. The daisy-chain system you see in this video is new to them.
