Artist and urban geographer Daniel Rotsztain has visited and drawn every single branch of the Toronto Public Library in a project combining “his love of Toronto, geography, architecture and exploring the city by bike, foot and TTC.” Drawings are regularly posted in the ongoing series All the Libraries Toronto. He also created a handy map of each branch he’s posted.
Rotsztain wrote about why he chose to take on the project.
A lot of people talk about how Toronto is divided, ignoring the things that unify us, like our library system. No matter where I am in this city – Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, North York, York or the old city of Toronto – I feel at home at the libraries I visit.
Every branch, though familiar, takes on the special characteristics of its neighbourhood. Toronto’s libraries can be found in heritage buildings, storefronts, malls, strip malls and community centres.
