A Incredible Scaffold Stairway Built to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Rotterdam’s Reconstruction

The Dutch architecture team of MVRDV created the Stairs to Kriterion, a grand temporary scaffold staircase that goes from the base of the city’s Central Station to the rooftop of the Groothandelsgebouw, offering incredible views all around. The stairs opened opened during the Rotterdam Celebrates the City festival, which celebrated the 75th anniversary of the reconstruction of Rotterdam after being completed razed by the blitz.

The Stairs to Kriterion are a nod to 75 years of rebuilding Rotterdam. The temporary exhibition offers an impressive landmark for the cultural event ‘Rotterdam celebrates the city!’. The scaffolding responds to the angles of the Rotterdam Central Station, connecting the contemporary icon with a historic monument, whilst through its construction referencing the reconstruction that the city has experienced. The project, which was opened last Monday, has seen over 10,000 visitors every day. The Stairs take visitors up onto the rooftop of the Groot Handelsgebouw where they can can take a tour around the exhibitions and the bar, whilst appreciating stunning views over the city. The Stairs are located in Stationsplein outside Rotterdam Central Station and are open between 10:00am and 10:00pm every day; admission is free.
