Designer Christian Poulsen has built his own DIY version of the BB-8 droid from the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens from a Sphero toy and some magnets. BB-8 recently appeared at Star Wars Celebration where it was revealed that the droid is a physical, mechanical object and not just a CGI creation.
Poulsen’s version moves somewhat less smoothly than the real thing, but seeing the droid’s head stay on top of its body as it rolls around a tabletop is still quite impressive to watch. Poulsen provides detailed instructions for turning a Sphero into a working BB-8 droid on his Behance page.
