A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Explorers Club, The Famous New York City-Based Exploration Society

Science Friday offers a behind-the-scenes look at The Explorers Club, the storied New York City-based exploration society. Will Roseman, executive director of the club, provides a tour of the society’s headquarters, which is filled with artifacts from numerous famous expeditions. Since the society’s founding in 1904, members have taken part in an astonishing number of “firsts” in exploration, among them:

1909–First to the North Pole (Robert E. Peary and Matthew Henson)
1911–First to the South Pole (Roald Amundsen)
1953–First to the summit of Mt. Everest (Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay)
1960–First to the deepest point in the ocean (Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard)
1969–First to the surface of the Moon (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins)

We previously posted about The Explorers Club 109th Annual Dinner.
