3D Imagery From NASA’s CALIPSO Satellite Tracks Plumes of Dust Traveling From the African Sahara to South America

NASA’s CALIPSO satellite tracks giant plumes of dust that travel from Africa’s Sahara desert to South America’s Amazon rainforest. The Goddard Spaceflight Center has released a video that gives a 3D representation of the dust plumes as NASA research scientist Dr. Hongbin Yu explains the phenomenon.

Data from CALIPSO was recently used in the first multi-year study of the fertilizing effects the phosphorous-rich dust has on the Amazon. Yu was one of the authors of the study.
