$13,238 Left in a New York City Taxi, A Lost & Found Tale

Recently filmmaker Casey Neistat left his luggage, containing more than $13,000 in video equipment, in a New York City taxi. He documented the difficult process of trying to track down his lost luggage in this New York Times opinion documentary.

A few weeks ago, I capped a long day of travel by leaving my luggage, which contained video equipment worth more than $13,000, in the back of a taxi. Calls to 311 and the taxi driver’s garage yielded nothing. I tried the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. I also tried the N.Y.P.D., which said a police precinct “makes all attempts to identify and locate the owner” if any lost property turns up. Since my bags were clearly labeled, I held out hope.
