WVIL, A Concept Camera With Lens That Detaches & Works Wirelessly

Wireless Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens

Wireless Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens

The Wireless Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens (WVIL) camera by Artefact is a gorgeous design concept for a camera whose lens can be detached from the body and used wirelessly (see the promo video.) Artefact faked a demonstration of the WVIL camera at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, which caused buzz, confusion and eventually indignation amongst gadget fiends.

With the lens attached to the body, the device behaves like a contemporary digital camera; with manual controls for focus and zoom on the lens, as well as aperture and shutter speed dials on the body. However, once the lens is detached, Camera Futura is an entirely different beast and reveals its true potential, by using the hardware architecture that we have christened “WVIL”, meaning “Wireless Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens”.

The camera body now acts as a wireless viewfinder for the lens that could be handheld or mounted on a tripod. Furthermore, lens controls such as zoom and focus are now facilitated through the use of the touch screen.
