A few weeks back at WordCamp 2007, I finally had a chance to meet Matt Cutts, a really great guy who is probably the most well known bloggers working at Google and one of the top authorities on SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which is the process of improving a website’s rank and search results with search engines. Matt, a software engineer, is the head of the Webspam Team at Google which works on fighting spam in Google’s index. He used to post anonymously in forums as GoogleGuy, but then eventually outed himself.
Matt gave one of the best talks at WordCamp “Whitehat SEO tips for Bloggers”, the closing talk on the first day of WordCamp 2007 (July 21st). Matt has posted a great write-up on this talk, including the PowerPoint deck that he used for the talk.
John Pozadzides shot videos of many of the WordCamp talks, including Matt’s talk and David Klein has taken things a step further and created a transcript of Matt’s talk.
If you are interested in improving your blog’s performance in search engines, specifically in regards to WordPress and Google, then Matt’s talk is a great resource. I’ve already implemented several of his suggestions here on the Laughing Squid blog.

I think Matt’s talk was among the best, if not _the_ best, at WordCamp. I got a chance to talk to him there (I think you were there too, Scott… can’t remember) – he’s a really friendly and approachable guy. Matt was the last speaker on the first day of WordCamp, and I was particularly impressed that he was able to incorporate a lot of the questions and concerns that people brought up to him throughout the day into his talk. Definitely worth watching if you’re interested in SEO or wondering how various SEO tactics may affect your ranking.
